How Working with a Life Coach Helped Me Get My Life Back on Track

bigstock-business-graph-output-growth-o-38917468Earlier this summer I felt lost – I had been working at the same job for almost six years and felt like I was going nowhere with it. I have a lot of interests, and I am good at a lot of things, but I’ve never been able to actually make a career out of any one of them.

Then I got an email from a woman named Nicola Bolt. I’d been reading the blog on her website,  on a regular basis for the past few years. The email said she was looking for two people to participate in the coaching program she was going to be releasing later this year. So I figured I’d put my name in for it, I had nothing to lose. I honestly didn’t expect to be selected for it, but about a week later she sent me an email saying she’d selected me to be one of the two people she wanted to work with! I was shocked and surprised, and very flattered. I emailed her and we agreed on a time to meet on Skype for an introductory session. After I met with her for that initial session, the sessions we did together lasted about two months – there was about a month break in between the first three and the last three sessions, because she was going on vacation and I also did some traveling, and it also gave me time to work on some of the things I needed to work on, like establishing this website.

How Nicola’s Program is Structured

Nicola’s program starts with an introductory session conducted either through Skype or Facetime, where she’ll get to know you and you’ll get to know her. She’ll explain more about how her program is structured and the process you’ll go through. If you find after talking to her that this is something you want to do, she’ll send you some paperwork to fill out and sign, and schedule your first session. You’ll then go through six sessions with her that are conducted over approximately a period of six to twelve weeks.  During those sessions, you’ll look at the things that are holding you back from achieving your goals, figure out the things you need to work on and the things you need to hold back on, go through regular progress reviews and accountability check-ins, come up with a plan for how to progress with your goals after the program is over. You’ll have regular homework to work for each session – the progress you make with her program depends on how much of it you’re able to get done.  She’ll send out an email with a summary of the topics you covered, as well as any handouts or templates for anything you need to do for the next session.

What You Can  Expect

Expect to do a lot of work. Getting to the bottom of why you’re struggling with whatever you’re struggling with can be a difficult process, but it’s very rewarding. Expect to possibly shed some tears during the process. Nicola is a very patient and very caring person, though, so she’ll be willing to do whatever she needs to do help you.

My Results

I am very pleased with the progress I made with Nicola’s program. I was able to figure out what I wanted to do  and start looking at possibilities for employment or independent contractor work, and also establish this website. I also started trying to make some headway on contacting my family more regularly, but progress in this area has been slow. I do plan to continue working on it, though. Not only that, but my self-confidence is through the roof now, as you can see by the picture above.

Tips for Success

  1. Schedule time in your day to work on the things you need to work on for each session. Your progress depends on how much of the homework you’re able to complete for  each session.
  2. Recruit people to help you. I’m a pretty resourceful person and was able to do most of it alone, but it can be helpful to have support from others.
  3. Take notes during each session. I took notes at each session, and so did Nicola. Also be sure to take notes on anything that you have to work on in between sessions so you have them to refer to at the next session.
  4. If you need any help in between sessions or want her to take a look at something, don’t ever be afraid to email her. Nicola is a busy woman, so you may have to wait a while for a response, especially if you’re in another country like me (Nicola is in the UK, I’m in the US). I sent her screen shots and links to things I was working on – even if she wasn’t able to get back to me right away, we always talked about them at the next session.
