What Are Some of Your Favorite Work at Home Tips?

I spend a lot of time writing posts about different things to help people who work from home, like myself – different websites, products, techniques, etc. But I hardly ever get any tips from my readers, so today I wanted to invite you to share some of your favorite tips that have helped you be successful with working from home.  Please feel free to comment below with your favorite tips!

  1. Try and keep a sense of consistency and routine. I just changed jobs and am working from home for the first time ever. It’s been a challenge to keep to a consistent routine, which has kind of thrown me off in other areas of my life as well. So routine is good. I try and keep similar hours to what I was doing before, when I was in an office. And I also try to batch similar tasks together.

    Oh, and turn off the tv! That’s been huge for me! I thought I could still get work done even if the tv was going. I mean, I can, but it’s a lot slower and not as great of quality. So mainly for me, just keeping in mind work integrity, even when no one is watching.

      Great tips Michelle! I also find that turning the TV off helps when I’m working – it’s actually a necessity when I’m working my day job. I also find that blocking distracting websites helps (see my review of Cold Turkey).

    I have been working from home for nearly eight months now, and here are some of the do’s and dont’s that I can think of:
    a. Home Office is still an office. The same rules apply: timeliness in getting work done, taking lunch and coffee breaks, catching some fresh air by stepping outside.
    b. Get a Standing Desk. Seriously. The temptation to walk into the bedroom with the laptop will reduce significantly.
    c. Use distractions as your “forced pomodoros”. I have five scheduled interruptions between 9 AM and 11 AM every morning.
    d. Dress for your working style. If your work requires to be dressed in business suits, put them on. Yes, that includes the pants.
    e. Your Dog (if you don’t have one, what’s keeping you from adopting one?) is your stress buster. Spend time with him or her every alternate hour during your workday. Hiding the treats is a great pastime.
    f. Set the groundrules: maximim 6 PM in the ‘office’. Anything beyond that, you are ruining your family time. That including getting the dinner ready.

      Great ideas Amar! I have yet to try a standing desk – I still have this big hutch that has books and stuff in it – I’d have to figure out what to do with it all!! 🙂 And great idea for using distractions as “forced Pomodoros”.

    My tip is to take a real lunch break. At my corporate job, my co-workers and I would take a lunch break each day, going to the cafeteria or sometimes to a local restaurant. When I first started working from home I would grab a sandwich and eat at my desk . Over time I found that stepping away from my home office and taking a break to read a book, walk the dog, or sit on the porch helped me to avoid burnout and be more productive.

    Break the work up into bite-sized chunks and take small breaks in between. Helps me stay focused throughout the day.

    Hey Erica, cool idea!

    I’ve been working from home for a few years. Here’s some of the stuff that helped me the most:

    – Block all distracting websites such as Facebook, news sites, and gmail (if possible). I use coldturkey for that.

    – Work in sprints and take a lot of breaks. I take small breaks every 25 mins and larger ones every 90-120 minutes. During that time I like to yawn, stretch, take some deep oxygenating breaths, and move my body. This helps keep my energy and concentration levels up for a long time.

    – Be nice to yourself. Don’t beat yourself up if you’re not making progress or aren’t as productive as possible. Focus on the process and judge yourself on effort. As Gandhi used to say: “Full effort is full victory.”

    – Don’t work too many hours. Instead schedule breaks and play time first. Then plan your work around it. Your mood is the key to a productive day… unless you generate enough positive emotions, you won’t be able to keep your productivity up for long periods of time.

    – Exercise. At home you have the freedom to move your body as much as you want. I find it helps tremendously with staying happy and productive. Also, the research shows it’s the best way to optimize our brains.

    My office is upstairs and my phone is downstairs. This forces me to either leave it alone or run a few flights of stairs to get to it. I wear a Fit Bit so I know that my stair climbing has gone up about 300%. I don’t know if this is good because I get more activity through the day – or if I’m just a phone addict. I do get more work done.

      I love that! I don’t have any stairs in my apartment, but maybe I should start leaving my phone in another room so I have to walk or r un to get to it…

    I’ve been working from home for nearly 4 years. And I absolutely love it! Here some of my tips:

    1) Create routines incorporating movement, breaks, start and end of your day.
    2) Have a “to-do” list with highest priorities and work on your 3 top first thing in the morning.
    2) Have a separate office space.
    4) Get a standing or a fit desk (bike desk).
    5) Adapt a dog (will ensure you take walks).
    6) When working, turn off all the distractions (emails, phone, social media) and focus on work. I don’t think anyone can sustain focus for over 90 min.
    7) Eat healthy. One my favorite perks is to be able to make your food!

    I only turn my phone on and check my emails after I had my morning practices. For that I have to go to sleep super early to give myself enough time for my morning routine, which includes some strength training, yoga and dog walking.
