The letter C can be elusive to some people. There are many words that begin with the letter C that people can’t remember how to spell. Originally, C made the same sound as G, but because of the Etruscans, the Romans had a bit of a problem, and they ended up using it for both the sound G and the sound K. The Anglo-Saxons borrowed this system when they created the English language.

    Something Else to Consider

C is also often used for roots whose pronunciations can be either “c” or “k” depending on the situation. For example, the word “public” uses the hard “c” sound that we hear at the beginning of the word “cat,” but the word “publicity” uses the soft “c” sound that we hear at the beginning of the word “city.”
